Since becoming a scare maze addict I have come to discover that actually, I don’t necessarily find clowns all that scary. But it comes down to the details of the clown to whether I fear it or not. So, I thought I’d sit and talk over my all-time favourites down to my least. Let’s start with the least favourites first.
Contagion – Farmaggeddon:
Unfortunately, I found this maze had one too many missed opportunities for scares. We did have a couple but it was far too luminous inside which made all of the actors even with your 3D glasses on somewhat visible. Therefore, you just know where the scare was going to happen & could easily predict how it would happen too. I found the up & down slopes brilliant to give the vibe of a fun house but again it was all too well-lit inside which dampened the overall experience.
Freak Out – Screamfest Burton:
I love the unique added theme to this maze rather than it being a common it’s clown maze. The thought that went into the backstory alone makes it so much more enjoyable & the fact it didn’t rely on 3D glasses to provide a fright. Unfortunately, the batching was a major issue during our run-through it meant that almost 40-odd people were all in a line trying to get equal scares as one another. The actors did try their utter best to solve the issue but unfortunately, there were far too many of us in one space at one time. But it’s not to say this maze, by all means, was bad as it wasn’t just that overcrowding that took a fair bit of the scares away.
Electric Circus- Tulleys Shocktober Fest:
This was an incredible step up from Twisted Clowns as it was known as previously. The loss of 3D glasses made it for us as it was less thing to distract us from getting stuck into the maze. The actors & actresses throughout knew how to play their roles perfectly. It just worked well.
Condemned Carnival – Screamland Margate:
I can never shake off the astonishment I felt when I learnt the woman in the first room was a real person, the best actress I’ve ever seen. Heading into the ball pit was hilariously horrifying alone as I couldn’t get my footing right. The next room delivered one of those real surreal scare moments where you get scared one side falls into another. This maze also had a literal giant as well. It was so beautifully themed and the scares all felt so cliche yet it worked well.
Freak Show Toxic Junkyard – Alton Towers Scarefest:
Do you class this as a clown maze? Is it a clown maze? Or is it just bunch of freaks? I don’t know but I’m popping it into this category either way. I loved it during 2020 but this year provided a whole new experience one which was 20x more intense. We found two actors during 2021 who managed to scare us countless times and never stopped either. The chainsaw finale almost done me completely the guy was bonkers and that’s we love so much about this maze. They are just so energetic and brutal with the scares! But also the theming and changes that were made for this year were also really fun & fab.
Honourable Mention – Trailers Big Top Style Scene:
It has to get a mention here somewhere. The actors were somewhat similar to the energy levels of those inside Toxic Junkyard. Yet a decent number of them inside one room was a lot to take in. The scares were endless and in all honesty terrifying. The audio is just chaotic in itself isn’t it? But add the strobe lighting and wild actors to that mixture and you have the perfect scene.
