Firstly massive thank you to Zack & the team for inviting us to check out this insane maze. So, Walsall Scare Maze… a scare maze attached to a nightclub with a great atmosphere. This review will contain spoilers.
Venue Itself & Queue:
Just a quick heads up for those newbies visiting. This attraction does not have its own car park however there is street parking available.
It’s a small venue attached to a nightclub or some kind of club. There is just the one scare maze. The atmosphere here is so much fun and it feels so easygoing on the exterior of the maze. You’ll be queuing with some actual bangers playing which relaxes you & lures you into a false sense of safety or at least it did me! This year the merchandise has had an expansion into a small shop which you exit into. Also, look out for some Pirate Adventure goodies too (photo below).
The Attraction Itself – Rating: 5/5
The organisation inside of this maze is immaculate. You’re split into four queues and ours was our group of 4 then a family of 4. Which was a comfortable-sized group. The batching of the groups was flawless. You did not have the chance to catch up with the group prior or behind which is something that needs to happen more across the UK scare events. This was faultless.
Each room had its own themed but they manage to tie the story together without making it feel peculiar to have such an assortment of characters & scenes. The individual character scares never felt that stereotype jump you’d get from those sorts of characters elsewhere. By any means the themes you pass through weren’t nothing unique as they were celebrating 5 years worth of mazes into one. However, the casts played their roles so well and the attention to detail across the sets were insane. One core actor who stuck in my mind for me was the one on the stage during the clown section. He was unhinged and was quite literally terrifying. The use of lighting to emphasise what is happening in each the scene was spot on.
There were a lot of moments I genuinely was terrified. Some of the stops in the rooms alone made you feel on edge. There was lots of drop down windows, two way mirror in the finale and hidey holes throughout. In one room me & Ant were told to stand in front of a cloth doorway which we genuinely thought we were gonna get grabbed & dragged down. All of the actors were so handsy with you which just adds to the hysteria of it all. The room with the doctor ended up with Ant having what is allegedly piss rubbed all over his face and it trickled on my hair! It’s grim but just fab. Another actor held Ant’s wrist and then skipped off leading him to the next scene was so creepy. The finale was traumatic. Who knew nuns could be THAT terrifying? The lights off touching and whispering were horrid and the way they lost their shit when the lights came back on. It’s just an insane experience.
The way they altered the group so you weren’t always at the front or the back. How they touched you and interacted with you. The fact they got rid of the stop-and-pick-out-like scenes from last year but still had those stops throughout the rooms made the maze for me this year. Usage of lights to props to storytelling. It all flows so well. Some of the good old-fashioned scare tactics worked amazingly. The small gaps between groups & the fact you never caught up with the ones & ahead or behind meant the actors had that opportunity to reset ready for us. Which then meant we had a flawless run-through!
Overall:
I always come away from this attraction with the impulse to go right back around again. It feels distinct from any other we do. Like there’s this sense of the team truly knows what they are doing and how to build the best scare attraction of the year. The tie-up between fun laughs & genuine fright is immaculate. I adore looking at the spooky sets in each room as you feel so lost within it that it’s hard to imagine an end to it. I’m not sure where these guys get their casts from but my goodness they are insane. The best actors & actresses to bless a scare maze.
As I mentioned last year I want to see these guys expand onto some bigger land and turn themselves into a full-blown scream park. They prove the possibility they have with their current singular attraction what could they do with numerous? Tonight truly felt as if they have outgrown this space given the sheer amount of people flowing in. The queue was over an hour long and I just feel it’s time for that next step & development. I have never seen a single bad review about this place. I do hope next year we have at least one more attraction to take the strain off.
Other then that nothing else needs to change. The entire attraction is excellent. It never fails to make me want more when leaving. I always fall in love with spooky season post-visit here.
