How is this event 50 minutes away from us & we have never been before? Quite honestly I have never known an event to be that unnerving in my life & that is how you finish up your Halloween season too. I have walked away shaken in all honesty. But before getting into this blog I want to say a massive thank you to the team at Dr Frights for gifting us these tickets. As always our opinions are not influenced by this matter.
Atmosphere & Hub:
Upon entering the little scream park you wouldn’t necessarily expect the level of scare that awaits you are inside the mazes in all honesty. It’s quite stripped back to the typical scream park. You’re not able to enter the bar until all mazes are completed which is something very different from anywhere else. There’s a cute little merchandise stall with very reasonable prices. A handful of food stalls and lots of themes. There was a small handful of roaming actors too. But the atmosphere is relatively relaxed on the exterior of these mazes which instantly allows you to fall into this false feeling of security. Again it’s another place that plays bangers whilst you’re smooching about.
House of Wax – 5/5:
We kinda stumbled into this maze first and had no idea where we were going. The batches are your singular group which is great for the experience but awful for my nervous haha. This maze played on one of my weak points for scares and that’s the combination of dummies with actors amongst them. The lighting is just excellent inside this maze-like it plays with your head. The audio was strong as well. Oddly enough I wouldn’t say the jump scares were the strongest points. But the atmosphere built up is just revolting and that alone gets a 5/5 rating from me. The room before entering was rough with a photo frame that has a dummy behind it which flickers on and off. At that moment I knew for a fact this was going to be traumatic. I can’t get over how good the sets are throughout they are simple but good. Some of the scares came from the most horrific areas like the roof, you quite honestly least expect a scare from there yet that’s specifically where it comes from.. unreal!
Monsters & Madmen – 4.5/5
I knew this maze was going to be ferocious as I detest horror movies & the characters that come from them. This maze was crammed with your classics. Again, the use of still dummies to actors within the same area was grim. The lighting and strobe section is that perfect level where you have no idea where you’re going or where the actors are but it’s not to the point you’re overwhelmed completely. It seemed like windows were some of the stronger scares in here. Again the sets were simple yet stupidly sufficient. My one gripe for this maze was the finale I personally wouldn’t have ended on The Purge but instead stuck Leatherface with a chainsaw there instead. For the record, stepping through the different sets was horrifically uneasy in itself in all honesty it didn’t need the actors to make it tense.
Killer Clowns of the Caribbean – 3.5/5
This maze was hilariously absurd! The music you’re hearing respectable scares throughout. In comparison to the others, it doesn’t quite compare as we began our an evening with the scariest of the bunch. I guess starting with the two we did truly meant that we were perhaps anticipating them all to be like that & less jokey. Which by all means ain’t this maze’s fault. Although that being said clowns have slowly begun to lose their touch on me I don’t find them all as horrifying as I used to. But this maze is fun for sure it’s not by any means an awful maze and the cast is fab as are the set pieces. It’ll be fascinating to where the clowns jet off to next season!
Grindhouse in Wonderland:
Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to do this maze due to having a phone call to come back for Loki.
Overall:
I am genuinely so lost for words by the mazes here. As in I didn’t anticipate coming away quite that spooked. Considering the sets weren’t necessarily the highest of budgets they just work so well with the best atmosphere and more significantly hands down terrifying. I enjoy the tactics that are used to create the scares especially that variety of still dummies with an actor amongst them. One thing which sticks out for me was Michael Myers’s section in the Monsters & Madmen which was insane. The team surely know how to develop a gorgeous set of mazes and I’m so sad we didn’t manage to get into Grindhouse! I’m very excited to return next season! It will be coming to be one of our staple attractions going forward. Hats off to all the actors & staff for being so tremendous we truly have fallen in love & found one of our new favourite events!
