How has it been almost 5 years since Slammer closed at Thorpe Park. This was easily our favourite UK flat ride and it still sits at the park just not in operation, always a bitter pill to swallow looking at it! So, as a throwback Thursday let’s talk all about this iconic gem.
At the moment of the closure, we had only been riding Slammer for a year or two. We never truly got to love the ride to what we would have wanted to. It stayed closed for what was referred to as maintenance which then made the rumours crank up about its closure. I refused to accept them until it was official, unfortunately, it did become real. It was the first ride that we both sat there in almost despair over. Me & Ant both cherished this ride and I do think we’ll forever miss it too. I wasn’t ready for it to go so abruptly I had hoped there’d be some kind of closing ceremony held yet it seemed that wasn’t possible.
Slammer was everything opposite to my type of flat ride preference. I often tend to favour those which offer airtime and a floating style of feeling. Yet Slammer delivered nothing but intensity to the point it felt as if you were gonna pop from it. On one of my final rides I was going around expecting my jaw to pop out of place it was that level of intensity. I have still never rode a single flat ride which is quite like this. The restraints alone were ridiculously ominous. I like something to cross my body in some sense but these were little shoulder restraints and a Rush style lap bar.
It was & is easily my favourite the flat ride I have ever done. I found the offering on this unbeatable. I’ll forever be sad it had to vacate although it remains in place still. I guess it’s one of those isn’t it really? I’m sure the park would have kept the ride if they had that option but I never really heard much as to what truly was the reasoning as to why it stopped operating.
